Review

Catwoman is a movie that seems more concerned with showcasing Halle Berry's beauty than telling a compelling story. From the sultry costume design to the numerous shots emphasising Berry's physical allure, the film is a visual feast for fans of the actress. However, beyond its surface appeal, Catwoman falls flat, delivering a silly plot, uninspired action sequences, and forgettable characters.

Catwoman (2004) - Movie Review : Alternate Ending

The film's biggest flaw is its failure to explore the intriguing concept of a woman transforming into a feline-like superhero. While we see Patience/Patience Phillips/Catwoman (the character has more names than a cat has lives) leaping across rooftops and hissing at bad guys, we never get a sense of what it truly means for her to become a catwoman. Where is the internal struggle? The exploration of identity? The existential crisis of suddenly being able to lick oneself clean?

Halle Berry does her best with the material (no doubt desperately trying to prove that she deserved that oscar just 2 years earlier), but even her considerable talents can't elevate the ridiculous script. Her chemistry with Benjamin Bratt's detective character feels forced, with their romance lacking the spark and passion one would expect from a superhero film.

Speaking of villains, Sharon Stone's turn as the malevolent cosmetics tycoon Laurel Hedare is one-dimensional at best. Stone tries to inject some life into the character, but ultimately, Laurel comes across as more of a caricature than a credible threat.

Catwoman (2004) - IMDb

The action sequences are similarly underwhelming, with the film's climactic showdown between Catwoman and Laurel feeling more like a catfight (pun intended) than a thrilling superhero battle. The film's score, by Klaus Badelt, does little to elevate the action, often feeling out of sync with the on-screen events.

In the end, Catwoman is a disappointing entry in the superhero genre. While it has its moments, particularly in its stylish visuals and Halle Berry's charismatic performance, it ultimately fails to deliver a compelling story or memorable characters. Fans of the comic book character may find some enjoyment in seeing Catwoman brought to life, but for most viewers, Catwoman will likely be remembered as an embarrassing film on Halle Berry’s resume.

Final Thoughts

Catwoman is a film that prioritises style over substance, delivering a visually appealing but ultimately hollow superhero tale. Despite Halle Berry's best efforts, the film's lacklustre plot, one-dimensional characters, and uninspired action sequences make it a forgettable entry in the genre. While it may satisfy fans looking for a bit of cat-themed fun, Catwoman fails to leave a lasting impression, proving that even the most iconic characters can fall victim to a poor adaptation.
